Originally populated by the Native American tribe of the Monomoyicks. William Nickerson, an English colonist, made the first land purchase from Sachem Mattaquason of the Monomiyicks which consisted almost all of Chatham. Fishing had been the towns primary industry. In the late 1800’s however, Chatham began to become a popular vacation destination for wealthy clientele which helped to grow and sustain its economy. The town remains a popular destination for vacationers, retirees and year round residents.
